What’s the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
Orthodontists have first trained as general dentists for five years and then undertaken a further three years of training in orthodontics to qualify as orthodontic specialists and are recognised by the Dental Council of Ireland.
Unlike orthodontists, dentists are not trained at university in fitting braces or overseeing other orthodontic treatments. Most general dentists will refer patients requiring orthodontic treatment to specialist orthodontists.
How long will braces take?
This depends on the complexity of your case and the technique used to achieve your ideal smile. While simple straightening of the front teeth can be carried out in as little as six months, this is not always a long-term solution and the teeth may move back to their original positions once the braces are taken off. It often takes at least 12 months to get the teeth fully corrected, biting correctly and in harmony with the jaws and lips. It may take longer for more difficult problems.
Is it too late to straighten my teeth?
You can get your teeth straightened no matter your age. Improving your smile can also improve your health and preserve your teeth. Today’s treatments are a lot more aesthetically pleasing, comfortable and faster. Even adults aged 50 and over can benefit from treatment by an orthodontist.
Does my insurance cover treatment?
This will depend on your insurance cover. You will need to check with your insurance provider.
In Ireland, taxpayers can obtain tax relief for orthodontic treatment of family members. To claim this relief, a taxpayer files a Med 2 Form along with his or her regular tax return.
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
While many dentists refer their patients to us at South Beach Dental, If you feel that you or a family member will need orthodontic treatment you can contact us directly to book a consultation.
Can I go straight to an oral surgeon?

What happens at the first consultation?
We carry out a gentle examination of your teeth, smile and jaw and take 3D scans and x-rays. We listen to what you like and dislike and your smile goals for treatment. Next, we simulate a 3D preview so you know exactly how your new smile will look. How often do I need to come to the clinic?
This will depend on your individual case and treatment option. On average, every 4-8 weeks for the duration of your treatment.
Payment Policy
How much will braces cost?
Each patient’s case is different, so it’s not possible to give an exact figure of how much dental braces will cost before you have an initial examination and evaluation. You should expect to pay in the region of around €3,800 for your braces—this figure may be less, or slightly higher and is only a general guide. During your initial consultation, we will list all treatment costs in detail so you know exactly what to expect.
